FENG SHUI in the GARDEN

My memories of visiting the wonderfully manicured gardens of Europe come flooding through my mind as I speak to you about Feng Shui in the garden.

As vast as these gardens were, they always felt welcoming natural pieces of art that embraced the soul.

You may not have these magical gardens at your door, but you can definitely experience the “feeling” of it.

Summer is here. Regardless if you live in a house, apartment or go to the cottage, it is a Canadian tradition (a must really …) that we spend most of our summer days enjoying the outdoors. Our front yards explode into vibrant greens and colourful flowers to welcome us as we arrive home every time.

But just as important is the backyard. Backyards are transformed into lounging areas, BBQ and eating areas, we entertain friends, relax and read a good book. We hear the birds singing and children laughter as they jump into the pool.

Here are a few Feng Shui tips to bring to these areas the same harmonious feeling as an European garden :

1. Foremost, protect yourself from hydro poles/boxes. Use rocks and plant material between it and your house.
2. Avoid the “jungle” look in your front yard. You need to have a clear view of your front door.
3. Treat the backyard as an extra room of your house, with the following best placements:

a. BBQ in the South
b. Compost in NE
c. Water feature in the SE or North
d. Swing/bench/ 2 chairs or a bird feeder in SW
e. A circle of white rock material and a Budha statue in the NW
f. Children’s swings in the West
g. Eating area in the East.
